Sleep intermission

My body does not appreciate sleeping through the night. Usually it’s my bladder that wakes me up.

I have a friend who is a few hours ahead of who sometimes chats with me while I can’t get back to sleep. The other night, while I was awake, he asked me if I was chatting during intermission. I think I like that better than insomnia. Sleep intermission is what I’ll be calling it from now on.

Friends for your future, not your past

Friends you don’t need

The above linked article talks about friends that you don’t need.  These are generally people who have been with you in the past, but your needs haven’t grown at the same rate.

If you have friends like these, maybe you should consider new friends to take with you into the future.

  1.  The Complainer
  2.  The Naysayer
  3.  The Doubter
  4.  The Bragger
  5.  The Flaker

I have a lot of friends who fit under #1 and #5.  I try hard to not plan things with either group.  The flakers get me more often than not.  I trust that they have changed, and they haven’t.  Live and learn, I suppose.

Las Vegas

There are drink holders in the bathroom stalls at the Binion. The bus runs from Fremont Street to the strip.  It’s much cheaper than taking a cab or Uber. They had milkshake and alcohol options.   We also got cheese curds and fries. Boozy milkshakes. They do fake weddings here.  It was on the way to the karaoke place. This was essentially Hennessy and cranberry. After karaoke, we wandered off to the piano bar.  He wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t good, either. The MLK day parade ran right by our hotel.

Grand Canyon

We went to the Grand Canyon and did the full self guided tour.  The zipline area was closed for the winter, but we weren’t planning on doing that anyway. This was the first stop.  All of the stores were closed, so we moved on quickly. We got back on the shuttle bus and moved along toward the next stop. The shuttle driver pointed out the head of the woman kissing the nose of the horse’s head. I am terrified of heights so when we got to the next stop, I did my best to take a look at the canyon.  I did more looking than photo taking. We went on the Skywalk.   We couldn’t take personal belongings with us, so we couldn’t take photos.   The Skywalk is in the background here.  It was three inches of glass that you walked on to look down into the canyon.  I hung on to the edge and did ok until a group of people walked by me quickly and it bounced a little.  I am glad I did it, but it was scary. This was the view from our table at lunch.  Gorgeous.

Road Trip!

A friend and I drove to Las Vegas. We didn’t really have a timeline, so we drove until we needed to pee, needed gas, were hungry, or saw something interesting. It took longer than anticipated, but there was no stress because no one needed to be anywhere by a certain time.

I’ll be posting more about the trip over the next few days.

Winterfest 2019

The amusement park near us has a winter themed event every year. They light up the trees and poles and have photo op places all along the walkway. They have shows and winter themed characters walking around greeting the children. My sister and I took her children during Christmas week.

We went to dinner first at a Thai place. It was delicious. The kids were reasonably well behaved. The man at the next table was not. Why is it that the more boring the story, the louder the volume? He had a ton of stories. Each one more boring than the previous one.

We moved on to the park itself. It was beautiful, but cold. The lines for the rides were long and it was dark so we could see the lights better. We informed the kids that there would be no riding rides that night. They were happy to run around.

We did see a show that the kids sat through. They mostly enjoyed it. I enjoyed being inside where it was warmer.

After several rounds of photo taking, we headed home. I was home way past bedtime, but it was a fun outing. Hopefully we can do it again next year.
