Gotta put the book down

I always have several books started. I read several for variety of reasons and genres. One reason is so I can put one down when it gets stressful and pick up another one. Today, every book I’ve picked up has had death in it. One book, about a third of the way in, the main character’s father dies. Another, the first sentence of the book, a random pedestrian gets hit by a car and dies.

I decided this was a sign to get up and get moving toward work. So I got in the car and started to listen to an audiobook by a comedian. I was listening to him talk about a soap opera. As I was about to get out of the car at work, the main character in the soap opera died.

I think I was not meant to read this morning. I should probably get some work done.

Baby steps in goal setting

My reading goal for 2019 is 75 books. I was asked why. Because I didn’t have a lot of trouble with 62 books in 2018. The 62 was chosen as a book a week, plus ten audiobooks. I fell behind for a while because of lack of concentration after my surgery. I caught up and surpassed my goal.

I feel that a goal should be a challenge, but not unattainable. Sure, I could set my goal for 1 book for the year, and meet it almost immediately, but there’s no challenge in that. I’d finish right away and be bored the rest of the year.

One of my Goodreads friends set a 2018 goal of 2018 books. She read 10. That’s not even close. Why set such an unattainable goal? Six ish books a day? Not going to happen, really.

I do have friends who set their goal over 100. I am not yet that brave. That would stress me out, so I add to my goal little bits at a time. I met that goal, next year try a little more. Maybe in a couple of years, I’ll be over 100. Not this one.

My retiree friends have 365 books set as a goal. And make it by early December. Please note… retiree. I don’t make time for a book a day yet. Maybe one day.

75 books in 2019. I think it’s doable for me. As those of you who read me frequently know, I have many halfway finished, so I have a little head start. I can do this!

Thirty day book challenge, day 17

Thirty day book challenge

A book with a person’s name in the title

Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks was a wonderful, thought provoking book. It is definitely worth reading. Nonfiction.

Seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo was unexpectedly a great book. It was fiction, but was almost historical fiction the way that some of the old Hollywood actors were thinly veiled.

The Glass of Lead and Gold, by Cornelia Funke

The Glass of Lead and GoldThe Glass of Lead and Gold by Cornelia Funke
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a wonderful Christmas story! I received it as a Christmas gift and didn’t realize that I was reading a Christmas themed book until after I’d started.

I am in awe of the writer, since I heard her speak a couple of years ago at a book festival. She’s an amazing writer.

I went into the book biased, since I knew I loved the author’s other work that I’ve read. I flew through the book, loving every moment, especially the ending. Wonderful!

I met my reading goal for 2018. In fact, I exceeded it. I slowed down on the reading because of it. I shouldn’t, but I did.

Last night, I ended up going to sleep before 8 pm. My eyes were just too tired to read. Couldn’t focus on anything. So I just bundled up and slept. I will get back to it today.

Dinner with a friend

Last week, I went downtown to have dinner with a friend. We’ve been trying for months to get our schedules together, so it was really important.

As I left the house, dad asked “Are you taking Inky with you? She wants to go with you.” Nope. A cat on public transportation and then downtown? No thank you.

I got on the train to be greeted by a woman with a box of the biggest cuties I have ever seen. I resisted the urge to tell her “your cuties are huge!”

Just before we entered the tunnel to go downtown, we were thrown off the streetcar since it had reached its final stop. What? No it didn’t, but ok. I walked to the next stop to get on the next train and ended up back on the same train I had just gotten off of.

As we traveled further along, I saw a guy with red sequin tie, blue long sleeved shirt with white fur cuffs and tinsel edging, with a grey fur shawl. I would have liked to ask his story, but I didn’t have the courage.

Finished an audiobook on the train ride.

It was very crowded union square. I really wanted to yell at people to move, but didn’t. My friend was proud of me.

We went to the cheesecake factory where we waited an hour for our appetizers, so we got them comped. Crab and artichoke dip. Yum.

I had the Thai chicken and shrimp with coconut curry, peanut sauce, and brown rice. Delicious.

After dinner, it was late so we both headed home. According to the schedule, my friend’s train was arriving first. We were waiting for friend’s train which was going other direction. His train arrived, so I turned around to wait for mine. My train arrived at the same time. Perfect!

My Christmas

I have had several Christmas get togethers already. The people giving the gifts knew me well, for the most part.

My uncle gave me a major hint about what to get him for Christmas, which was much appreciated. I received a Starbucks card from him.

My manager at work handed me a Fandango gift card and declared me the most impossible person to buy for. My coworkers stepped up to my rescue and told her she just doesn’t listen to me. That was great.

I had a friend give me a book that was on my to be read book. She already read it, so she gifted it to me because the book exchange she was going to required only new books over $15. She decided she wasn’t going to the exchange. I benefited.

Another friend pulled my name for the stocking exchange. I received a book mark, Giants, swimming, and Tinkerbell items, along with other things.

My kids gave me stuff for my upcoming trip and pjs for the family party last night.

My parents gave me a bottle of wine, a book seat (I’ll blog about that later), a couple of books, and chocolate. I also got a couple of Tinkerbell towels and more pjs. Mom couldn’t figure out how to gift ebooks, so I didn’t receive them from my parents.

This year, the gifts were well thought out. I feel like I was slacking on giving, but I did ok with the giving. It’s just that all the gatherings are spread out this year, so the gifts went over several paychecks.

I received snuggles from my nap buddy and was acknowledged by Mini. I was also allowed a three hour nap. So I got lovely gifts from the felines.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

2 books behind schedule!

I am almost caught up!  Just in time to end the year right.

I have an Agatha Christie book going as an audiobook in the car.  I may finish it this week.  Definitely by boxing day.

I have a Meg Cabot book going as a library book.  It’s short, so it’ll be finished quickly, if I sit down and actually get into it.

I have several e books going.  They may be finished by this weekend.

I can do this!  Five books to go by 12/31.
