PBS The Great American Read

AmericanahAmericanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Because this book showed up on the PBS Great American Read list, I wanted to read it for a while. It popped up for bookclub, so I made an effort to read it. I didn’t manage to get it read in time for bookclub, but I had read enough to know that I wanted to finish it.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was just longer than I thought it was. The book never dragged. It was a great story and brought up some difficult topics that made me think.

I recommend the book, but it’s not a book that is meant to be read in one sitting. It requires time to digest the thoughts in the book. Read a little, put it down, and think about what its meaning is.

The book also showed up on the 100 books to read by ages list. I do think that the age of 26 was a little young for the recommended age of this book. There’s quite a bit that might be missed by a younger person who hasn’t been through some of the situations yet.

AGE 8 “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” BY J.K. ROWLING

Best Books to Read from Ages 1-100

I loved all of the Harry Potter books.  My daughter read them as they came out, as soon as she was old enough.  The final one in the series came out when she was in second grade.  She finished it in a day and a half.  I had to wait until she finished in order to read it.  I would definitely agree that an 8 year old should read at least the first in the series.  Loved them!

Jane Eyre – Charlotte Brontë

I didn’t read Jane Eyre until I was an adult.

I read this book for the first time this year. It showed up on several lists, including the PBS list, Classics, the age list, the BBC list, and many more.

I loved the book, but I loved knowing what all the references meant, after all the years of not really understanding them.

This book should definitely be on a must read list. I loved it.

The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I went into this book not knowing what it was about. I knew that there had been a movie made, but I hadn’t seen it.

I was not expecting the story at all. It was an important message told in a clear and interesting way. I feel that it was toned down a bit to reach a larger audience, though. I felt that reaching the larger audience was important, so it being toned down a bit didn’t bother me as much as it normally would have.

AGE 4 “Charlie Parker Played Be Bop” BY CHRIS RASCHKA

Best Books to Read from Ages 1-100

Charlie Parker Played Be BopCharlie Parker Played Be Bop by Chris Raschka
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This would be a perfect bedtime book for a small child.  I’m not sure that 4 is young enough to truly enjoy the book, though.   I wasn’t thrilled with the story, but I would imagine that a small child would enjoy the rhythm of the book. It was short and I’m not really sure why the cat was involved the book at all.
